Moroccan Runner Tests Positive, Ledecky Quizzed – Cliff Notes

The Sports Minister of Morocco has revealed that Moroccan runner Amine Laalou was barred from entering Britain a day before he was to compete at the London Olympics. Laalou had been scheduled to run in the 1,500-meter heats at the Olympic Stadium and reportedly failed to clear a drug test. Moroccan sports minister Mohamed Ouzzine said he didn’t know all the details of the reported case of the runner.

Ivan Tsikhan, a three-time world champion hammer thrower from Belarus, was kicked out of the London Olympics as an @IOC retest found his doping samples from the 2004 Athens Games to be positive. Tsikhan, who won the silver medal in Athens Olympics, had expected to start qualifying for the hammer throw final but was instead sent home by the IAAF, and faced a possible life ban after a second positive test. Oleg Grinko, a spokesman for the Belarus Olympic Committee, said a letter has been received from the IAAF that Ivan Tsikhan should be taken out for doping from 2004 in Athens. After the 2008 Beijing Games, Tsikhan got in trouble and was stripped of his medal after he tested positive for abnormal levels of testosterone.

A banned diuretic was found in a sample the Moroccan runner gave at the Monaco Diamond League meeting on July 20, French sports daily L’Equipe reported on its website. The diuretic was furosemide that is used for disguising the presence of anabolic steroids and other banned drugs. Meanwhile, the International Association of Athletics Federations declined to comment on the reports.

Laalou becomes the second Moroccan 1,500-meter runner to be barred from the London Olympics after Mariem Alaoui Selsouli was suspended last month by the IAAF for testing positive for furosemide. The 28-year-old Selsouli was caught doping at the Paris Diamond League meeting on July 6 and is facing a lifetime ban if a second offense is proven.

Russian track cyclist Victoria Baranova was also expelled from the London Olympics after failing to clear a pre-Olympics doping test made at the request of the International Olympic Committee as part of pre-games testing, the governing body of the sport said. The 22-year-old Baranova was the bronze medalist in the sprint at the European championships and is listed by the sport’s governing body as the No. 2-ranked sprinter and keirin rider in the world. Baranova is the two-time under-23 European champion in both the sprint and the keirin and coached by her father, Alexei. The track cyclist admitted her guilt and said she bought the tablets containing testosterone and took one tablet but was asked to take the doping test on the same day she had taken the testosterone tablet.
